Thomas is a man who’s devoted to reach the maximum best. His intelligence and risk taking ability took him and his family to the next level. Although, the giant power he managed to get hold off did come with certain drawbacks. To portray such a complexly diverse character, Cillian Murphy did absolute justice to it. Cillian alongside the brains behind the show Steven Knight did everything in their power to break the records. Steven successfully delivered his first episode in 2013. Since then, Cillian has helped him a lot in every aspect and have made decisions regarding the character mutually. However, something they might’ve forgot showing was Thomas eating.
Why We Never Saw Thomas Shelby Eat
Although this might come as a bit of a shock but it was first realised by the fans during season four. They went almost three and a half seasons unnoticed. Fans instantly made theories about how Thomas has been avoiding foot throughout the series. During an interview, Cillian mentioned and appreciated the ability of the fans to notice such an unanticipated feat. He further said, “It seems like he never sleeps or eats,”
He also mentioned Thomas Shelby as an “all consuming” character. During an interview for Oppenheimer, he further acclaimed that how Steve and he let such a big detail slip.
“It became a Tommy thing. These things develop over the course of the show. For example, I remember we’d gotten through the first two series and then we realised Tommy has never eaten. We’ve never seen Tommy eat — like he’s sat down at tables but has never consumed a morsel. So then we kind of made it a running gag. So throughout the thirty-six hours of television, Tommy Shelby never consumes anything. Except I think once he consumes a sprig of mint when he’s with his son.”
Cigarettes and Alcohol Are Thomas’ Fuel?
Thomas’ character demanded a variety of healthy meals so that he keeps conquering. Although at the same time, people who’re as invested in their work as Thomas was, forget that eating is even a thing. Steven and Cillian probably went abiding this theory and we only saw Thomas consuming alcohol and cigarettes.
When an actor plays a character for a very long time, it sort of makes the fans believe in even the insignificant things it does. Thomas’ smoking habits are widely recognised by the fans. In the latter, they became so used to it that they knew a cigarette was going to get lighted before the scene came.
